How to Set Up Wireless Security for the PS3

The PlayStation 3 system includes gaming, multimedia and online features. The PlayStation 3 connects to the Internet and the PlayStation Network through a wired or wireless connection. When you connect your PlayStation 3 system to the Internet or free PlayStation Network, you can access new content and additional features available only online. In order to connect the PlayStation 3 system to a secured wireless network you must use the PS3 setup to configure the wireless security settings.

      Select "Settings" from the XMB home menu using the PlayStation 3 wireless controller. Highlight "Network Settings" under the "Settings" menu and press "X."

      Select "Internet Connection" and choose the "Enabled" option to turn on the PS3's connection. Select "Internet Connection Settings" and press "X" to continue.

      Choose "Yes" on the warning screen. Choose "Custom" and press "X." The "Custom" setup option gives you the most control over your settings.

      Choose "Wireless" and press "X" to continue with the setup procedure. Select "Scan" to allow the PlayStation 3 to scan for your wireless network. Alternatively, you can select "Enter Manually" if you know the name of your wireless network.

      Choose "None," "WEP," "WPA-PSK" or "WPA2-PSK" as your security setting. This setting must match the security protocol that your wireless network is using. Press "X" on the PS3 wireless controller.

      Input your wireless network's security key or password with the PS3 on-screen keyboard or with a connected USB keyboard. Press "Enter" twice to close the on-screen keyboard. Proceed to the next screen by pressing right on the left analog stick or the directional pad on the PS3 wireless controller.

      Choose the "Automatic" option for setting up your IP address on the PS3. Press the "Right" button on the directional pad and choose "Do Not Set" for the DHCP host name. Press "Right." Select "Automatic" for the DNS setting. Press "Right."

      Select "Automatic" for MTU settings. Press "Right" and select "Do Not Use" under Proxy Server settings. Select "Enable" on the UPnP settings screen. Press "Right" on the directional pad.

      Review your network settings and then press the "X" button on the PS3 wireless controller to save your configuration. Press "X" to test the connection.
