How to Play Pal PS2 Games on a PS3

Two different broadcast video formats are used: NTSC and PAL. The United States and a few other countries use NTSC while most of the world uses PAL. PAL video has a few more frames per second than NTSC and has a slightly different resolution. If you have an older PS2 PAL (PlayStation 2) video game and you want to play it on a PS3, your PS3 must be PAL. This means you can't use a PlayStation from the United States with a European video game.
