How to Hook Up Your PlayStation to a Cable Modem

While your Sony PlayStation 3 has built-in wireless so you can connect the console to any wireless access point to connect to the Internet, you can also connect the console directly through a cable modem. Connecting your PS3 game console directly to the Web through a cable modem is very easy to do, taking only a few minutes to both set up your console and connect it to the Internet.

Connect your PlayStation 3 game console to your cable modem using an Ethernet cable. The length of the cable needed depends on the distance of your PS3 from your cable modem. The Ethernet cable plugs directly into the rear of your PS3 console, as well as the rear of your cable modem.

Move to the Settings option on the XMB (short for cross media bar--another name for the PS3's home menu).

Scroll down to Network Settings and press "X" on the controller.

    • 5

Select the Internet Connection option and make sure it's set to Enabled. Then scroll down to Internet Connection Settings and press "X."
