Things You'll Need
Instructions
Find a 2.5-inch SATA drive. There are no storage caps for PlayStation 3 hard drives, so you can install anything from 80 GB to 1 TB with no problem, as long as it conforms to the 2.5-inch size standard.
Unplug your system and lay it on a flat surface. Use a Phillips-head screwdriver to pry off the HDD door on the side of the PS3. Once the door is gone, you will see a blue screw. Remove this screw and set it aside.
Flip up the metal latch on the right of the current hard drive and pull the hard drive bay out of the console. Use a screwdriver to unscrew the four anchor screws from the hard drive bay.
Remove the old hard drive from the bay and replace it with the new one. Make sure that the data connectors are facing the bottom of the bay. Put the top of the bay over the top of the hard drive and replace the four anchor screws.
Slide the hard drive bay back into the PlayStation 3 console and then replace the metal latch. Secure the blue screw in place to anchor the bay.
Pop the HDD drive cover back on to the console. Plug the console in and power it on. The PlayStation 3 will automatically detect the new hard drive and begin the formatting process. Depending on the size of your hard drive, this process can take 1-2 hours. Once the drive has been formatted, the PlayStation 3 will automatically reboot and your new hard drive will be ready to use.
