How to Get PS3 Internet Without a Router

The Sony PlayStation 3 is an impressive gaming system capable of playing Blu-ray movies and even allowing you to surf the Web. The PS3 can automatically connect to a wireless connection if you have a network set up. If you only have the modem and no router, you still can connect to the Internet using a wired connection. This method will work for either cable or DSL Internet--you just need the Ethernet cable to connect the modem to the back of the PS3.

    • 2

Connect an Ethernet cable to the back of the modem. The modem port will usually be labeled "Ethernet."

Plug the Ethernet cable into the back of the PS3. The port will be labeled "Lan."

    • 4

Re-connect the power source to the modem and turn on. Once complete, turn the PS3 back on also.

    • 5

At the PS3 XMB (main menu) navigate to "Settings," "Network Settings," "Internet Connection." Mark as "enabled."

    • 6

Under "Network Settings," navigate to "Internet Connection Settings." The following message will pop-up: "If you perform Internet connection settings, the system will be disconnected. Do you want to continue?" Agree to disconnect by highlighting the "Yes" option at the bottom of the screen and then pressing "X" on the PS3 controller.

    • 7

Choose "Easy," then press "X" to continue. This will automatically choose the basic Internet settings for your PS3. Press "X" again to save the settings, and then press "X" to test the connection to make sure it works. The PS3 will automatically attempt to obtain an IP address and connect to the Internet. Once confirmed, press "O" on the controller to exit and your PS3 will be connected to the Internet.
