How to Get IR With the PS3

Sony's PlayStation 3 home video game console uses wireless Bluetooth technology to communicate with remote controls and video game controllers. Because of this, you will not be able to use a universal remote control with your PS3. That is because regular remote controls use IR (infrared) technology to communicate with other electronics, and the PS3 does not inherently support IR. To get IR functionality with your PS3, you need to buy an adapter.

  Purchase a Sony PlayStation 3 IR adapter. This small device allows devices such as universal remote controls to communicate with your PS3. In turn, you can use a universal remote to control your PS3 while watching a DVD or Blu-ray disc.

  Plug the base of your IR adapter into a controller port on the front of your Sony PlayStation 3.

  Program your universal remote control using the IR code indicated in the user manual of the specific model of IR adapter that you purchased. This code is how the remote is able to identify and communicate with the adapter, which then passes the instructions along to the PS3.
