How to Do a System Link From a PS3 to a Laptop

The Sony Playstation 3 is capable of playing many different types of music and video files as well as Blu-rays and games. If you have a library of content on your computer, you can link the two and share files across your network. This is a convenient way to watch your downloaded movies on your big-screen TV or listen to your music in another room. Linking your PS3 with your computer can be done in several easy steps.

Instructions

  1. Configure the PS3 on the Same Network as Your Computer

    • 1

Go to "Settings" in the Cross Media Bar on your PS3 and select "Network Settings". Ensure that "Internet Connection" is enabled.

    • 2

Configure your Internet settings. Under "Network Settings" in the "Settings" menu, select "Internet Connection Settings." Select "Easy" and continue to the next page. If your connection is wired, select "Wired" and continue to run the network test to set up your connection.

    • 3

Select "Wireless" from the "Internet Connection Settings" menu if your connection is wireless. Continue to the next page and select "Scan." A list of available wireless SSIDs (Service Set Identifiers) will populate.

    • 4

Select your SSID and enter your wireless networks password, if applicable. Continue to run the connection test to set up your connection.

    Enable Sharing on Your Computer

    • 5

Open the Windows Media Player on your computer. You can download it for free if you do not have it. (See Resources)

    • 6

Select "Tools" from the toolbar and open the "Options" menu.

    • 7

Select the "Library" tab and click on "Configure Sharing" to open the sharing menu box.

    • 8

Check the "Share my media to:" checkbox to enable sharing. Your PS3 will be listed in the device list as either "PS3" or "Unknown Device." Right-click it and select "Allow" to enable sharing.

    • 9

Add the files that you would like to share into Windows Media Player.

    View Your Shared Files

    • 10

      Turn on your PS3.

    • 11

Go to either the "Movies," "Music" or "Photos" menu in the Cross Media Bar.

    • 12

Check to see that your computer is listed in all three of the menus. You can now view whatever files are in your Windows Media Player on your PS3.
