Things You'll Need
Instructions
Determine what kind of television you are connecting your PlayStation 3 to. If you have a high definition set with HDMI inputs, connect your PS3 using separately-purchased HDMI cables. If you have a standard definition set, you will need to use the PS3's included A/V cables for setup. Refer to your TV's user manual to determine its capabilities.
Power on your TV and set it to the input channel that matches the connection type of your PS3 (A/V or HDMI).
Press and hold the PS3's power button for five seconds while the system is in standby mode (the console will beep two times). This resets the video settings of your PS3 and automatically adjusts them to match the current connection.
Check that your settings are optimized by going to the "Settings" option in the home menu and scrolling down to select "Display Settings." Press "X" to enter the menu and select "Video Output Settings." Here you can choose your connection type and the console will automatically adjust to the best video output for your setup. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the process.
Go to "Game Options" in the "Settings" menu and press "X" to edit the options to upscale PlayStation and PlayStation 2 games. Change the "PS/PS2 Smoothing" option to "On" to fix the rough edges on some of the graphics in older games. Select "PS/PS2 Upscaler" to change the size of the picture displayed on the screen for older games. This will stretch or fit the image to the size of your screen.
