How to Create PS3 Backups

Backing up your saved game data from a PlayStation 3 is just as important as backing up personal files on a home computer. Nobody wants to lose the countless hours of game play they̵7;ve put into completing some of these games, but it does happen. Power surges, hard drive failures and even accidental deletion are just a few of the hazards we face every day as PS3 users. Thankfully Sony makes it easy to back up your information to an external source.

Instructions

  1. Individual Game Data

    • 1

      Turn on your PlayStation 3 and load up the XMB.

    • 2

      Insert an external memory source into one of the slots on your PlayStation 3 console. This can be a Memory Stick, SD memory card, CompactFlash, USB thumb drive, or an external USB hard drive.

    • 3

      Locate the saved game data you wish to copy using the XMB̵7;s ̶0;Saved Data Utility̶1;. Highlight the entry and press the ̶0;Triangle̶1; button to access ̶0;Options.̶1; Choose ̶0;Copy̶1; and press ̶0;X.̶1;

    • 4

      Select your external memory source and press ̶0;X̶1; to copy data from your PlayStation 3 to your external memory source. Note that some saved game data is copy-protected by the game developer and cannot be backed up on a game-by-game basis. A full system backup of your PS3 is required to back up saved game data that is copy-protected in this manner.

    Full System Backup

    • 5

      Turn on your PS3 and access the ̶0;Backup Utility.̶1; This can be found under the ̶0;Settings̶1; tab of your XMB and then by clicking on ̶0;System Settings.̶1;

    • 8

      Choose the appropriate external memory source. As with individual game saves, you can make a full backup of your PlayStation 3̵7;s data using a Memory Stick, SD memory card, CompactFlash, USB thumb drive, or an external USB hard drive.

    Trophy Data

    • 9

      Access your trophies by going to ̶0;Trophy Collection̶1; under the ̶0;Game̶1; tab of your PlayStation 3̵7;s XMB.

    • 10

      Press the ̶0;Triangle̶1; button to access your ̶0;Options.̶1;

    • 11

      Select ̶0;Sync with Server̶1; and press ̶0;X̶1; to backup your trophy data. Because this saves your information directly to Sony̵7;s servers, you do need a valid PlayStation Network account to perform this operation successfully.
