How to Repair a PS3 System

The PS3 combines the features of a game console and a Blu-ray player in one device but like many highly sophisticated devices it can easily overheat. An overheating PS3 displays an LED on the front called the ̶0;yellow light of death̶1; and shuts itself off. Repairing a PS3 system so that it doesn't overheat can be done at home, although you will need to open up the case and add heat dissipation paste to the GPU and CPU chips inside of the case. Do this only if the cost and time lost of sending the PS3 system to a service center is unacceptable.

Put newspaper down on a table. Disconnect all cables from the PS3 and put it down face up on the newspaper. Insert the flat edged jeweler's screwdriver into the crack between the case and the hard drive panel on the right side of the PS3. Wiggle the hard drive panel loose and put it aside.

    • 2

Use the Torx screwdriver to remove the blue screw inside the hard drive compartment at the top. Open the metal hatch and pull out the hard drive from inside of the PS3's case.

    • 3

Turn the PS3 face down on the newspaper. Put the flat-edged screwdriver between the rubber feet and the case and wiggle them free. Use the Phillips screwdriver to remove the screws that were under the rubber feet. Turn the PS3 back face up and put it down on the newspaper. Slide the top shell of the PS3 towards the right until it comes free of the PS3.

    • 4

Remove all of the exposed screws on the top of the PS3 using the Torx screwdriver. Slide the top shell up and towards the back panel and off the PS3.

    • 5

Use the Phillips screwdriver to remove the screws from the Blu-ray drive that is near the left side inside of the bottom case. Lift up the Blu-ray drive. Pull the ribbon connector and the power connector straight out of the connectors on the back of the Blu-ray drive. Remove the screws holding the Wi-Fi antenna at the extreme left top inside of the PS3's case using the Phillips jeweler's screwdriver. Pull the ribbon connector out of the Wi-Fi antenna.

    • 6

Use the Phillips screwdriver to remove the screws around the power supply. Lift the power supply up. Pull out the two connectors attached to the power supply by squeezing each connector at both sides while pulling.

    • 7

Use the Phillips jeweler's screwdriver to remove the power eject switch screwed into the motherboard near the front inside of the PS3's cable. Turn the PS3 over and remove the screws that have arrows pointing to them using the Phillips jeweler's screwdriver. Turn the PS3 back right side up. Remove the plastic tabs from the back panel using the flat- edged jeweler's screwdriver. Take the back panel off.

Pull the connector attached to the fan off. Remove the screws surrounding the fan with the Phillips jeweler's screwdriver. Pull the fan up and off. Insert the flat-edged jeweler's screwdriver between the contacts of the battery to release the battery. Remove the screws from around the hard drive using the Phillips screwdriver. Pull the ribbon connector and power connector from off of the hard drive. Lift the hard drive up off the PS3's case.

    • 9

Use the Phillips jeweler's screwdriver to remove the screws holding the metal heat sink to the motherboard. Pull the heat sink off. Pull the motherboard up and off the PS3's case. Turn the motherboard upside down and release the tabs holding the metal shield to the motherboard and take the metal shield off of the motherboard. Turn the motherboard back right side up and hold it from the top while standing it up vertically on the newspaper.

    • 10

Adjust the setting of the heat gun to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Apply heat from the heat gun to both sides of the motherboard in a swirling and back and forth motion for about 30 seconds a side. Put the motherboard down on the newspaper with the CPU and GPU chips facing up. Adjust the heat gun to 70 degrees Fahrenheit and heat the CPU and GPU chips using the same swirling and back and forth motion. Remove the heat gun after three minutes have passed.

    • 11

Wait for the motherboard to completely cool down. Open the tube of thermal paste and apply it lavishly on top of and around the CPU and GPU chips. Use the cardboard flap to smooth down the thermal paste that is on top of the CPU and GPU chips. Let the thermal paste set.

    • 12

Reassemble the motherboard to the bottom case of the PS3. Reattach the power eject switch, the hard drive and the Blu-ray drive to the bottom case of the PS3. Reassemble the PS3 and reattach all of the cables. Turn the PS3 on and watch as the game console comes on for use.
