How to Repair a PS3 That Does Not Read a Disc

Since the very beginning of production of the Sony PlayStation 3, there have been issues with the Blu-ray laser diode. This ultimately caused a delay in the launch of the system and limited the number of consoles available at first. Unfortunately, this has also led to some gamers experiencing a disc read error, whereby their PS3s will not read any disc. This is most likely because the laser lens has failed and needs to be replaced.

Things You'll Need

  • Torx screwdriver TR10
  • Flat-head screwdriver
  • Phillips-head screwdriver
  • Replacement laser lens KES-400AAA or KEM-400AAA or KEM 410ACA

Unplug the power cable, video cable and controllers and remove any discs from the disc drive.

    • 2

Remove the rubber foot on the left side of the PS3, unscrew the security screw and slide off the top lid.

Unscrew all nine screws under the lid and lift off this section to reveal the inside. Be sure to unplug the cable that connects to this lid before completely removing it.

    • 4

Remove the gray box. This is the Blu-ray drive. Disconnect the power supply and the cable connecting it to the motherboard.

Remove the five screws on the outside of the Blu-ray drive to remove the metal shell.
