Connecting to the PlayStation Network
Connect an Ethernet cable into the Ethernet port located on the back of your PlayStation 3. The other end of the cable should connect into your modem or router. Ensure that your connection is up and running and any router you have is turned on. Now power on your PlayStation 3 and go to the "Settings" menu on the cross media bar. Scroll to the bottom of the menu and locate "Network Settings," then press "X." Scroll down to "Internet Connection" and make sure it is listed as "Enabled." Now you'll need to select "Internet Connection Settings" and press "X." You will be given the option of choosing a wired or wireless connection. Choose the appropriate setting and press "X." This will take you through the process of connecting via your connection. Choose the "Easy" connecting method from the menu and press "X." Your PS3 will automatically detect your settings and display them on the next page. All that's left is to test the connection setting, which you can do by scrolling to the last page of the setup menu.
If you've chosen to connect via wireless, you will save your connection with a chosen name. The PS3 will automatically attempt to connect to this access point when you log into the PlayStation Network.
Creating a PlayStation Network Account
Now that you can connect to the PlayStation Network, you will need to create an account. Select "PlayStation Network" from the cross media bar. Once you've located this option, scroll up with your controller until "Sign Up for PlayStation Network" has been highlighted and press "X." You'll be taken to the PlayStation Network setup menu. Select "Create a New Account" and press "X". On the next screen, you'll need in enter some person information, such as your date of birth, an email address and your home address. Your email address will be used to log into the network, while your home address will help determine which region you are located in.
Now select an Online ID and password. Your ID is similar to a screen name and is used when chatting with other players or accessing any online features of your PlayStation 3. Once you've chosen your ID, save this information and return to the cross media bar; this time choose "Account Management," which will only appear once you have an account with the PlayStation Network. Choose "Account Information" from the sub menu and press "X". Select "Billing Information" and press "X." On the next screen, you will need to enter your password for verification and then you'll be given access to the billing menu. Enter you credit card information and press "OK" to save. Once finished, you can exit this menu. You are now connected to the PlayStation Network with your PS3, and you can use all online features.
