How to Install a PS3 Laser Lens

The PS3 video game console relies on a laser inside of the Blu-ray drive in order to play games and watch movies. A defective laser renders the PS3 basically useless and is an expensive repair that takes much time if sent to a service center. Replacing the laser yourself is not a casual repair, but it will save a lot of money and let you get back to using your PS3 within a couple of days or less.

Things You'll Need

  • Clean cloth
  • No. 4 Phillips screwdriver
  • No. 00 Phillips screwdriver

    • 1

Remove the power cord and any audio video cables from the PS3. Put the PS3 on the clean cloth.

Lift off the hard drive door on the PS3's side. Remove the blue HDD screw with the No. 4 Phillips screwdriver. Put the screw aside.

    • 2

Slide the hard drive toward the front and pull it out of the PS3. Put the hard drive aside.

    • 3

Remove the warranty sticker at the top of the open space where the hard drive was. Unscrew the rubber foot from inside and put the screw and foot aside.

    • 4

Slide the top of the PS3 to the left to reveal other screws. Remove any screw that has an arrow imprinted next to it. Put the screws aside.

    • 5

Lift the top of the PS3 from the back until it stops. Turn the PS3 around so the components are facing you. Remove the ribbon cables connected to the memory card readers if using a first-generation PS3. Take the top off and put it aside.

    Replacing the Laser

    • 6

Locate the Blu-ray drive and unscrew it from the PS3 case with the Torx screwdriver. Lift it and remove the power and ribbon data cables from the Blu-ray drive with a straight pulling motion. Put the drive down on the clean cloth.

    • 7

Remove the screws from the sides and top of the Blu-ray drive with the No. 00 Phillips screwdriver. Raise the top and remove the additional screws that are now revealed. Remove the metal top and put it aside.

    • 8

Remove the screws surrounding the Blu-ray lens on the Blu-ray lens assembly. Replace the defective Blu-ray lens with the new Blu-ray lens. Replace the screws to hold down the Blu-ray lens. Put the metal top back on and replace the screws to hold the metal top on the Blu-ray drive. Attach the power and ribbon data cables back onto their connectors on the Blu-ray drive. Put the Blu-ray drive back onto the PS3 case and screw it down.

    • 9

Reverse the disassembly process to reassemble the PS3. Dispose of the defective laser.

    • 10

Plug in the power cord and the audio and video cables into the appropriate connectors on the PS3. Turn the PS3 on, insert a game disc and start playing.
