Instructions
Open the Xbox 360 Case
Remove the power plug and audio/video cables from the Xbox 360. Place it down horizontally on the clean cloth.
Put one hand inside the door that covers the USB ports and squeeze the top and bottom of the faceplate with the other hand. Pull the faceplate off.
Bend the gray ventilation shield on the right so you can see the gray piece of plastic inside. Take the long thin stick and put it through the white holes where the clips attach to the shield. Pull out the gray pieces attached to the chips so the plastic comes off.
Press the button on the front of the Xbox 360 and remove the gray plastic from the left side by repeating the process with the long thin stick that was done on the right side.
Turn the Xbox upside down on the cloth. Take the flat edged screwdriver and pry off the 4 clips holding the top sheet of the console to the bottom. Lift the front of the bottom shelf to look inside.
Use the Torx screwdrivers to remove the 14 silver screws and the 8 black screws from inside of the console. Turn the console right-side-up and lift off the outer shell.
Repair the GPU Diode
Remove the motherboard from the metal cage. Take off the heatsink from the GPU and the CPU chips.
Take the scraper tool and scrape off the thermal paste from the top of the two heatsinks.
Take the Brillo steel wool pad and scrape off the thermal pad on top of the aluminum GPU heatsink and the pad on top of the copper CPU heatsink.
Remove the thermal paste from the GPU and CPU using small pieces of paper towel soaked in 409 household cleaner.
Apply heat sink thermal paste liberally to the top of the GPU and CPU. Let the paste set. Put the heatsink back onto the GPU and put the heatsink back onto the CPU. Replace the motherboard back into the metal cage.
Reassemble the Xbox 360 console by reversing the disassembly process. Attach the power cord and the audio and video cables to the Xbox 360. Turn on the Xbox 360 and enjoy playing games again.
