What Do I Do If DNS Error Occurred on My PS3?

A DNS (Doman Name System) error is a frustrating experience for Playstation 3 owners that are trying to get online to join their favorite multiplayer game. Luckily, this is a known issue, and there are some simple solutions to prevent the error from occurring.
  1. What is DNS?

    • Domain Name Service (DNS) is a network communication protocol. DNS allows easier communication from the client to the server without users having to input a specific IP address.

Physical DNS Error(s) on the PS3

    • The Playstation's DNS error is usually the result of increased network traffic, a nonresponsive server or a weak wireless signal. Check the router for power, the Internet connection's status, and if necessary, use an Ethernet cable to plug the PS3 into the router.

    PS3 Firmware Update

    • If an Internet connection can be established, a user can check for updates on the PS3 XMB and select "Update System." Otherwise, visit the Playstation 3 Support site and forums for other update options and solutions.

    Manually Resolving the DNS

    • Manually entering DNS settings through the PS3's <Network Settings> is another solution. The router's DNS settings and the DNS settings of the ISP are needed.

    Router Firmware Update

    • The router's firmware may also need an upgrade. Check the manufacturer's website for instructions.
