Will Any USB Headset Work on the PS3?

Anyone who walks through a video game aisle in a store can see that there are plenty of Playstation 3 specific products for sale, including headsets. But what about third-party headsets that are built for use with USB ports? Will those work with the Playstation 3 console? According to gamers, they will.
  1. The Sony Playstation 3

    • Sony never designed the Playstation 3 expecting that gamers would want anything other than the headsets that were created for it. Those headsets are, for better or worse, made with wireless Bluetooth technology. Many gamers, however, have expressed an interest in utilizing their old Playstation 2 headsets, or even after-market headsets that are made for USB ports, such as those created by Logitech.

    Are They Compatible?

    • According to QJ.net's Playstation 3 Website, the Playstation 2 headsets that utilize USB ports are indeed compatible and easily used with the PS3. Their information, according to the Web pages, comes from Game Informer Magazine, which tested the units during a multi-player session on the "Resistance: Fall of Man" title from Insomniac Games.

    What About Typical USB Headsets?

    • According to the many gamer forums on the Internet, most--but not all--USB headsets are compatible with the Playstation 3 console. Gamers have suggested the Logitech Vantage USB headset as a quality unit at a fairly low price of $30 new. The AudioFX Pro 5+1 headset is also usable on the PS3 console, but comes with a much heftier price tag of $70 new.
The prices can get even steeper, but the products definitely work with the PS3. The Tritton AxPro Dolby Digital Surround Sound headset is pretty much top of the line, but it blows away the competition with the price alone, ringing in at $155 at TigerDirect.com. It comes complete with a microphone and eight--yes, eight--speakers.
