PS3 Blu-ray Problems

The Playstation 3 is not only a gaming console, but also a Blu-ray player for high-definition movie playback. As a Blu-ray player, the PS3 can experience problems that might otherwise be foreign to gamers. Both software and hardware errors can cause problematic playback and can be symptomatic of larger issues with the console.
  1. Display Issues

    • You may notice when playing a Blu-ray disc in your PS3 that the image being displayed is in a lower definition than your television can display, or there are quality issues such as flickering or sharp contrasts. If you notice any of these when playing a movie, you'll need to enter the BD/DVD Menu of your Playstation 3. This can be found on the far left of the cross media bar and controls how your movies are displayed. Set the "BD/DVD Video Output Format (HDMI)" option to "Automatic" this will detect whether you are playing a game or a movie and adjust the display based on the media. Also, on the Display menu, make sure you check all the "Video Output Settings" that your television accepts. If your television doesn't support 1,080p don't select it. Also, test which output looks best and keep that as your main output source.

    Disc Read Errors

    • If you're having no trouble playing any games or high-definition content you've downloaded but your console won't read any Blu-ray discs that have been inserted into the console, this is a sign you will need to have your console repaired. This issue occurs when the Blu-ray lens is damaged, or the disc drive becomes damaged.

    Long Load Time

    • When playing Blu-ray movies, PS3 owners will be introduced to a feature of their console which accesses the Internet to download content for their movie before the initial playback. There is no message stating that your console is accessing the Internet, and you're left with a long loading screen. If you find that when you start a Blu-ray movie, the movie is taking several minutes before it loads, don't panic. Check the Blu-ray case to see if the movie features online content. After the initial long loading time, it will start up immediately for future viewing.

    Updating Firmware

    • If you're a Playstation 3 owner who doesn't upgrade your firmware on a regular basis, you may be seeing errors in playing Blu-ray movies. When the Playstation 3 upgraded to version 1.5, there was a bug in the software that caused some consoles to become unable to play Blu-ray movies. While this was patched in later versions, those who do not have a constant Internet connection with their console will not see the fix. As of September 1, 2009, the Playstation 3 is on version 3.0 of its firmware. If you do not have this latest version, either upgrade through your console or download the new firmware from the official Playstation website.

    Dirt on the Lens

    • As your Playstation 3 is used more and more, the lens that reads Blu-ray discs can become dirty. This will lead to discs skipping or not being read by the console. If you find this is happening on your Blu-ray discs, either movies or games, you may need to have your console cleaned. Be careful when attempting any sort of cleaning of your console, as improper handling will further damage the Playstation 3.
