Play Station 3 Problems

The Sony PlayStation 3 offers a variety of entertainment features, including a built-in Blu-ray player, full networking support (including Internet browsing), a full media player with photo, music and video capabilities, Bluetooth compatibility and a huge library of games. With all of these features, there are many common problems users of the PS3 experience, but most are not difficult to fix. With a little patience and sound troubleshooting, you will be back up and running in no time.
  1. Disc Freezing

    • If you experience a certain disc causing your PS3 system to freeze, whether it is a Blu-ray, CD or DVD, you might have an issue with your system. First, remove the disc and inspect it for smudges, scratches and debris. Clean the disc and try it again. If the problem persists, try another disc of the same format (Blu-ray, CD, or DVD). If you still still experience freezes, your system needs to be sent in for repair. Contact Sony customer service at 1-800-345-7669 from 6 a.m. - 8 p.m. PST Monday through Saturday or 7 a.m. - 6:30 p.m. PST Sunday.

    Picture Problems

    • If you are having issues with the image displayed on your television by your PS3, turn off the game console and disconnect all cables from it. Verify that all cables are firmly connected and they have no visible damage. When you plug everything back in, hold the PS3's power button for at least 5 seconds to reset the unit's video output settings. If you are experiencing a buzzing sound or lines in the picture on the television, ensure that your PS3 isn't plugged into an overloaded electrical socket. If that is not the case, try moving the console further from any coaxial cables or non-insulated wiring, as they can cause interference.

    Connecting To The Internet

    • First, reset your modem and router by unplugging their power cords for 30 seconds or more, then plugging them back in. If there is no change, check all other Ethernet cables. If you are on a wireless connection, determine that the network is working properly by logging onto it with a computer. In addition, with a wireless connection it is important to remember that 802.11n routers must be set to "Mixed Mode" to enable the router to connect to 802.11b and 802.11g wireless signals. For details on this setting, check your hardware's manual or contact the manufacturer.

    Backward Compatibility

    • If you are having issues playing a PS1 or PS2 game in your PS3 console, it is important to know that many PS3 systems are backward compatible, but not all. Sony hasn't done a very good job educating consumers on the specifics of their hardware's backward compatibility, or even the fact that not all PS3s are backward compatible. The following model numbers are NOT backward compatible: CECH-2001A, CECHP01, CECHL01, CECHK01, CECHH01, CECHG01. If you have a PS3 with any of the model numbers mentioned, playing PS1 or PS2 games is out of the question.

    Overheating Console

    • The PS3, being a powerful gaming system, can overheat, especially if proper circulation is not occurring. If your system won't turn on and it is displaying a flashing yellow or red light, most likely the system is overheated. Unplug all of the cables so that the console can be moved to an area with better air flow while it cools. Get some compressed air and blow out all of the vents on the PS3 to ensure proper circulation inside the unit. Be sure that once the PS3 is reconnected it is in an open space as opposed to inside a closed cabinet. Maintaining good airflow in and around the unit will keep the machine from overheating.
