How to Upgrade a PS3 Slim Hard Drive

You may want to upgrade your PS3 Slim's hard drive to get more room for games or simply for bragging rights. You can quickly accomplish this upgrade so you can get back to playing your PS3 Slim as quickly as possible

Things You'll Need

  • Small Phillips screwdriver
  • External hard drive or flash drive
  • USB cable
  • PS3 Slim
  • 2.5-inch laptop hard drive

Instructions

    • 1

      Connect your external hard drive or flash drive to the PS3 via the PS3's USB port with a USB cable.

      Turn on the PS3 Slim. Select the "System Settings" icon on the left side of the interface, then select the the "Backup Utility" option to back up the current data stored on your current internal PS3 hard drive. (If there is no previous data on the PS3 Slim you need to save, you may skip this step.)

      Turn off your PS3 Slim and disconnect it from the external power source.

      Turn your PS3 over and remove the the plastic cover that says "HDD" by using the Phillips screwdriver to carefully remove the blue screw. Use the screwdriver to remove the chassis from the hard drive. Be careful with the drive, and be sure not to strip the screws.

      Insert the new drive into the PS3. Replace the screw and the "HDD" cover. Turn on your PS3 Slim.

      Format your new drive by selecting "System Settings" and then the "Format Utility." This may take several minutes.

      Plug in the external hard drive or flash drive to one of the PS3 ports with the USB cable. Select "System Settings" and select the "Restore PS3 System." Your new, upgraded PS3 should be ready to go!
