History
Sony originally offered its 80GB system (model #CECHE01) with four USB ports, multimedia memory card slots for reading SanDisk and nearly full backwards compatibility with PS2 and PSX games through emulation. However, this model has been discontinued and has since only been bundled for sale with Motorstorm and Metal Gear Solid 4.
Present Day
The current 80GB PS3 (model #CECHP01) has only two USB ports, no multimedia memory card slots and is completely incompatible with PS2 games. It does support the play of games made for the original PlayStation.
Common Capabilities
Each of the 80GB models has a built-in hard drive disk, Cell Broadband Engine, Blu-Ray player, 1080p high-def output, WiFi and the ability to connect to the PlayStation Network free of charge.
Popularity
Futureshop, a Canadian retailer, sold close to 4,000 Metal Gear Solid 4 bundles in a matter of minutes upon the bundle's release.
Reactions
The discontinuation of the more versatile CECHE01 model has left fans of the console disappointed and straying in other directions, as evidenced by the PS3 further solidifying its third place rank in sales behind the Wii and Xbox 360.
