How to Play the Card Mini-Game in Final Fantasy 8

The eighth installment of the popular role-playing game Final Fantasy began a tradition of playing-card mini-games. The card game in Final Fantasy 8 is a strategy-based game called Triple Triad, in which you try to "flip" an opponent's cards by placing better cards on a grid. Triple Triad seems confusing at first, but as you play, the strategies of the game become more apparent.

Instructions

    • 1

Leave the classroom where your main character starts the game and walk out into the hallway. Talk to the man standing near the elevator to receive your first set of Triple Triad game cards.

    • 2

Find a Triple Triad player and press the "square" button next to him to initiate a game. You can find the first player just outside the entrance to the school.

    • 3

Choose the cards you want to use in the match. Examine the numbers of the four sides of the cards and pick cards that can be used well in tandem. You want cards with higher numbers on the sides, so they have a better chance of defeating your opponent's cards.

    • 4

Lay down cards with lower numbers pointed toward the corners, so your opponent is less likely to be able to defeat your cards.

    • 5

Place a card with a higher number pointed toward an opponent's card with a lower number to "flip" that card. If at the end of the match you have more cards flipped than your opponent, you will be declared the victor and be allowed to take one of your opponent's cards.
