How to Get New Limit Breaks in Final Fantasy 7

Limit breaks are devastating special attacks that Final Fantasy 7 characters use when they have taken a certain amount of damage. Each character has four "levels" of limit breaks, with the first three levels each having two different limit breaks. Although it may appear at first that characters are learning new limit breaks at random, there is a specific formula for how they are acquired.

  Fight in random battles until one of your character's limit-break meter becomes full and he is able to use a limit break.

  Use the first limit break of the level eight times in combat to learn the second limit break for that level. For example, Cloud will have to use the limit break called "Braver" eight separate times, and then he will learn the second limit break for that level.

  Continue fighting in random battles with your characters to learn the next level of limit breaks. Instead of using the second limit break of a level a certain number of times to reach the next level, the character must kill a specific number of enemies.

  Kill the specific number of enemies required for the character to learn the next level of limit breaks. The number of enemies it takes is different for each character and for each level of limit break. Cloud needs to kill 120 enemies to learn his second level of limit breaks, whereas Cid only has to kill 60.

  Acquire and use the specific item necessary to learn the final level of limit breaks for each character. Every character has a different item, and they are all found in different places throughout the game. The final level cannot be learned by defeating specific numbers of enemies or using previous limit breaks. It can only be learned by using items.
