How to Install a PU-23 Modchip

Many video game players have an interest in getting more from their PlayStations. One way to do this is by installing what's known as a modchip, which will allow the playing of games designed for other systems and expand the performance capabilities of the machine. A PU-23 motherboard is found in some PlayStations, but each chip installation is slightly different depending on the PlayStation's motherboard model.

Instructions

    • 1

Flip over the PlayStation and remove the six bottom screws holding on the cover with the screwdriver.

    • 2

Unplug the four cables and the laser ribbon from the board. Gently remove the large black laser unit and set it aside.

    • 3

Unscrew the four screws holding the metal shield in place, then remove the shield.

    • 4

Drop solder on seven connection points on the circuit board by holding your solder wire above each point and heating it with the iron. Do not spill solder onto neighboring points. The exact points you need should be diagrammed in the instructions included with your modchip or on the website from which you purchased the modchip.

    • 5

Solder each wire to its appropriate point by holding the wire tip next to the point and carefully reheating the solder with the iron, then letting the solder cool again. Be sure to follow the diagram included with your chip. Assigning the wrong wire to a point will prevent your chip and possibly the entire game unit from working.

    • 6

Lay the chip and wires flat against the board and reseal the unit by reversing the steps you took to open it. When closing, be careful not to short any of the chip's exposed wires by letting them touch the metal cover.
