Level-Down Tricks for Final Fantasy Tactics

"Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions" is a tactics-oriented "Final Fantasy" spinoff role-playing game, released in 1997 exclusively for the PlayStation 1 and rereleased in 2007 for the PSP. In this game, players control a party of up to 10 members from a multitude of classes in isometric, turn-based battles against computer opponents. Leveling-down is a tactic employed by advanced players to remove experience while retaining stats in order to (eventually) max out the stats of a particular character.
  1. Degenerator Trap

    • Locate one of the maps that has a Degenerator Trap, Deep Dungeon, Dolbodor Swamp, Fovoham Plains or Zeklaus Desert. Bring four math-skill characters and one battle-skill character. Use your math-skill characters to petrify and destroy every enemy except one on the map, then use the battle-skill character to whittle the last enemy to low health. Petrify them, then activate the trap with a character you want to level-down. Step off the trap tile, then step back on to reactivate it. This will take a long time but is a reliable way of activating the trap.

    Teleporting

    • To use the teleporting trick, follow the steps from the Degenerator Trap trick, except equip "Teleport" as any character's movement skill. Teleport on the trap to activate, then teleport off and teleport back to reactivate. This method ultimately takes fewer turns but has a chance of failing to activate the trap.

    Mindflares

    • For characters who can learn the "monster skill" trick, go to a map with Mindflares on it, then cast "Slow" or "Stop" on the Mindflare, move the monster-skill character (usually a Beastmaster) within the proximity of Mindflare, then have that character use the monster-skill "Level Blast" on him/herself to level-down quickly.

    Other Tips

    • All ally characters should have "Slow" cast on them, and all characters leveling-down should have "Haste" cast on them so they will take priority and appear to have multiple turns in a row to step on and off the trap. Enemies can be disabled in a number of ways, including "Petrify," but casting "Daze" and "Frog" on enemies turns them into confused frogs, which not only makes them harmless but inert. "Flare" can be cast to end the fight quickly after all allies have been leveled-down.
