Anticipate the game situation. Determine -- based on the type of team, down situation and the number of yards to go until achieving a first down or touchdown -- what kind of play the offense will likely call. In many situations, the CPU team will pass the ball on second down with more than 10 yards to go and on third down with five or more yards to go. Passing teams pass the ball more often than run, so it's easier to decide if they are going to pass the ball in certain situations.
Call the right formation for a passing situation. Bring in extra pass defenders for situations where it looks like the other team has to pass. Load the defensive backfield five, six or seven defensive backs (known as cornerbacks, strong safeties and free safeties). Bring in formations like the nickel defense (so called due to the presence of five defensive backs), dime defense (used primarily when the offense needs 10 yards or more and uses six defensive backs) and prevent defense (has seven defensive backs roaming the defensive backfield). You can use one or two of these extra defenders, or one of your linebackers, to rush the quarterback and still have enough defenders in the backfield to protect against a pass.
Call the right play to get to the quarterback. Call a blitz play, which sends a defender who is normally lined up against an offensive player, such as a wide receiver or tight end. Assume the role of that player by tapping the "O" button until the player is highlighted.
Rush the quarterback when the ball is snapped. Use a spin move -- by tapping the "Square" button and "L" button at the same time -- to get past defenders in front of you. Press the "L" button and "X" at the same time when you get near the quarterback to deliver a big hit and get the sack.
