How to Get Your Chocobo to Evolve in Final Fantasy IX

There are obvious benefits to evolving your chocobo in "Final Fantasy IX." Each time your chocobo evolves, he gains a new color and ability.   Go east from Lindblum's Dragon Gate to Chocobo's Forest. Speak with Mene to receive a Gysahl Green, then exit. Stand on the chocobo tracks outside the forest and use the Gysahl Green. A chocobo will appear. Mount him with the "X" button, then enter the forest again.

  Speak with Mene to play the Chocobo Hot and Cold Game. Find buried treasure during the game by pressing the "Square" button to dig in the ground with your chocobo. Pay attention to the sounds your chocobo makes to determine how close you are to a treasure. When you have found something, your chocobo will say "K-KWEHHH!!!" Continue digging in this spot to obtain the treasure. Sometimes the treasure will be an item, and sometimes it will be a Chocograph.

  Continue playing the Chocobo Hot and Cold Game until you locate all the Chocographs in Chocobo Forest, then exit the area. Press the "Triangle" button while you're atop your chocobo to access the Chocograph Menu. Equip the Healing Shore Chocograph, then go to the beach northwest of Cleyra. Dig here to find the treasure, and your chocobo will gain the Reef ability.

  Take the airship to the southwestern area of the World Map. Land north of Palmnell Island, then ride your chocobo through the shallow waters to a cave. Enter Chocobo's Lagoon and play the Chocobo Hot and Cold game until you've obtained all the Chocographs, then leave the area.

  Go east of Chocobo's Forest to the shallow waters. Equip the Dawn Lagoon Chocograph and dig in the area. When you find the treasure, your chocobo will gain the Mountain ability.

  Return to Chocobo's Forest. Play the Chocobo Hot and Cold Game until you've obtained all the available Chocographs. Exit the area and head to Evil Forest. Equip the Green Plains Chocograph and go northwest to the high plains. Dig here to find the treasure, which will grant your chocobo the Ocean ability.

  Head back to Chocobo's Lagoon. Dig up the remaining Chocographs, and also the newly available Chocograph Pieces. These six pieces will form the Mist Ocean Chocograph. Exit the lagoon and fly to Alexandria Harbor.

  Mount your chocobo and equip the Mist Ocean Chocograph. Go northeast to a pair of small islands. Head northeast from here until you're along the equator. Search the ocean to find the treasure containing the Sky ability. Your chocobo is now fully evolved.
