How to Change the PS1 Lens

There are many generations of the Sony PlayStation game console, but they all use a laser to read game discs. This laser is located inside of the unit in the disc drive assembly. If your PlayStation 1 (PS1) isn't reading game discs, you likely have a dead laser. If you are interested in a home project, you can disassemble and replace the laser yourself.

Instructions

    • 1

Power off your PlayStation and unplug the cables from the rear of the unit and the controllers from the ports on the front of the unit.

    • 2

Remove the six screws on the bottom of the unit.

    • 3

Lift the top case of the PlayStation off of the unit to expose the internal components. The laser assembly will be visible near the disc drive. The lens assembly is connected to a metal rod.

    • 4

Remove the screw holding the rod in place. Lift the rod up and slide the lens assembly off of the rod. Be careful since the lens is still attached to the PS1 via a ribbon cable.

    • 5

Unplug the ribbon cable from the lens and set the old lens aside.

    • 6

Plug the ribbon cable into the new lens assembly and slide the lens assembly over the rod.

    • 7

Fit the rod back in its compartment, replace the rod screw and the lens will be set.

    • 8

Replace the top case of the PS1 and the six screws underneath the unit.
