How to Fix Broken PS1 Controller Slot

Initially released in 1994, most PlayStation video game consoles are starting to show their age. As with any aging electronic device, if you want to keep your PlayStation in working order, it is going to require maintenance from time to time. One of the more common repair tasks needed in a PlayStation is fixing a broken controller port by replacing it with a new one. The PlayStation owner is in luck, as replacing the controller port in a PlayStation is much easier than in other systems.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the square cover on the back of the PlayStation. Press the tab on the side of the cover inward and it will pop off.

    • 2

Remove the six screws from the bottom of the PlayStation. There will be three along the two longer edges.

    • 3

Turn the PlayStation right side up, then pull the top cover off. Without the screws holding it in, it should lift easily.

    • 4

Unscrew the two Phillips screws holding the controller ports. The two ports are part of a single piece, with one screw on either end.

    • 5

Pull the ribbon cable straight up and out of the connector holding it to the motherboard.

    • 6

Take the damaged controller port out of the PlayStation.

    • 7

Install the new controller port by following these directions in reverse.
