Differences Between Mega Man Legends & Mega Man 64

"Mega Man Legends" was released in 1998 for PlayStation consoles. "Legends" was the first fully 3-D title in the franchise and utilized the PlayStation's ability to draw polygons. It was well received and garnered positive reviews from game critics. In 2001, it was ported to the Nintendo 64 console and retitled "Mega Man 64." Due to the different technologies of the consoles, the games had technical and aesthetic differences.
  1. Audio differences

    • The PlayStation used compact discs with around 700 mb of memory. The Nintendo 64 used cartridge-based game storage, and the largest cartridge only had 64 mb of available space. The voice acting in the PlayStation version had to be extremely compressed to play on the Nintendo 64, so voice quality took a large dive in "Mega Man 64." The original game also had much more music since many clips had to be cut during the conversion process.

    Graphic differences

    • The most notable difference is the draw distance of polygons. In the PlayStation version, you can see further away in some places than you can in the Nintendo 64 version. The 64's graphic-drawing capabilities were much faster than the PlayStation's, and it used anti-aliasing. Anti-aliasing made it possible to smooth much of the jagged edges on polygons that appeared in the PlayStation version.

    Control differences

    • "Mega Man 64" players controlled characters with the directional pad and analog control stick. The PlayStation version used the directional pad alone. It did not use the DualShock controller, which featured two analog sticks, even though the controller was released shortly before "Mega Man Legends." Nintendo 64 users could also use the RumblePak controller peripheral with "Mega Man 64." The rumble effect was only notable when Mega Man took damage.

    Technical differences

    • There was a built-in save feature on the "Mega Man 64" cartridge. The PlayStation required a memory card to support game saves.
