Set up your abilities: Press the "Circle" button in the PlayStation version or the "D" key in the PC version to pull up the menu screen. Go to the Junction menu. Give the "Draw" command to everyone in your squad. Make sure at least one player has the "Blind" spell.
Talk to Cid after you receive the mission to Timber. Speak to him twice to receive the magical amp. Pull up the menu screen. Scroll to the items and select the lamp. This awakens Diablos and starts the fight.
Prepare for Diablos's attacks: Diablos uses flying physical assaults coupled with "Graviga," a spell that takes off up to three-quarters of your health. Cast healing spells as soon as Diablos uses "Graviga," since he follows it up by attacking the character with the least number of hit points. Cast "Blind" on him to reduce his ability to hit you with physical attacks.
Use the "Draw" ability to steal the "Demi" spell from Diablos. Cast the spell back on Diablos to take off a quarter of his health. Diablos has plenty of hit points, so keep drawing and casting until the spell gradually stops doing a high amount of damage. Since "Demi" takes off a percentage of health, this indicates Diablos is running out of hit points.
Go on the offensive. Use your limit breaks and keep pounding away at Diablos. He should have only a portion of his hit points left due to the "Demi" spells you cast. Keep attacking until he dies. You are now able to summon Diablos in battle as a guardian force.
