How Do You Know If a Chocobo Is Male or Female in Final Fantasy 7?

Breeding chocobos is one of the most entertaining and useful side quests in "Final Fantasy 7." Certain areas in the game can only be accessed with a specific breed of chocobo, so you need to become a master chocobo breeder if you want to explore every inch of the world of "Final Fantasy 7." Before you worry about which chocobo combination will result in the best offspring, however, you will have to determine the sex of your chocobos.

  Purchase a stall for your chocobo at the chocobo ranch. Talk to Chocobo Billy to purchase a stall and any necessary greens for catching a chocobo. You can buy up to six stalls at 10,000 gil a piece. You cannot do this until you get the second game disk, however, so if you are on the first disk, don't worry about the sex of your chocobos.

  Capture a chocobo and send it to the ranch. Find a set of chocobo tracks on the world map and wander around in them until you get into a fight with a chocobo. Feed the chocobo some greens and kill the other monsters to capture a chocobo. Do not attack the chocobo or it will attack you back and then run away. If you own a stall at the chocobo ranch, you will get the option to send your captured chocobo directly to the ranch.

  Visit the chocobo ranch and talk to Chocobo Billy. Choose "Move Chocobos" from the list of options that appears. Pick the chocobo you just captured and choose "Put it in" from the available options.

  Name the chocobo. The game will tell you the sex of the chocobo at this point. It will tell you to give the chocobo a male or a female name.

  Talk to the chocobo in its stall at the ranch any time you want to know its sex. A dialog box will appear that tells you its name, sex and class.
