How to Use Samurai Skills on Final Fantasy Tactics

"Final Fantasy Tactics" is a strategy role-playing game released by Square Enix for the PlayStation gaming console. The story centers on a fierce war between two kingdoms. It is told from the perspective of a young nobleman who finds himself in the midst of the clash. Battles in "Final Fantasy Tactics" are built around the "job system," which allows players to promote their units to one of many professions in the game. Each profession -- including samurai, an advanced job -- has its own range of abilities and modifiers.

  Load your "Final Fantasy Tactics" save file.

  Make sure at least one member of your party is a samurai. Every job in "Final Fantasy Tactics" has an associated job level. To progress to the more advanced classes in the game, a character must meet certain level requirements in the earlier job classes. To become a samurai, a character must have the knight class at Level 3, the monk class at Level 4 and the lancer class at Level 2. You can view and alter your party settings by pressing the "Triangle" button while on the world map screen.

  Engage in a battle. "Final Fantasy Tactics" features random and storyline battles. Random battles can occur any time you travel from one location to another on the map. Storyline battles are marked by various symbols on the world map; they begin automatically when your party travels to the marked location. When you enter a battle, a party menu will appear onscreen. Use the menu to select the characters for the battle and specify their starting locations on the map. Be sure to include a samurai in your party.

  Perform actions during battle to accrue job points. Job points are used to unlock new abilities. In order to use an ability in battle, you must first buy it with job points from the ability page of the party menu. Have your samurai perform as many actions as possible in battle to build up job points.

  Teach your samurai abilities from the party menu. Once your battle is complete, open the party menu from the world map screen. Highlight your samurai and select it by pressing "X." Select "Learn Ability" from the list of available options. Highlight the "Samurai" listing and press "X" to open the samurai abilities page. The ability page contains every ability available to the selected job. Each ability has a price in job points, which is listed next to it. Highlight any available ability and press "X" to buy it. Once you buy an ability, it will always be available to that character.

  Purchase any reagents required for your chosen abilities. The samurai class in "Final Fantasy Tactics" performs magic by drawing spiritual energy out of special katanas. A samurai cannot use his abilities if the player does not own the appropriate katana. Samurai katanas can be purchase from most major cities in the game. There is a small chance that your samurai will destroy the katana when using an ability, so it is a good idea to purchase more than one of each.

  Engage in another battle using your samurai. Select the "Draw Out" option from the list of actions to view your samurai's available abilities. Highlight any ability and press "X" to bring up a targeting reticle. Move the reticle using the directional pad to target the chosen ability. Press "X" a second time to use the ability.
