Raise your monster for seven game months. When you first begin raising a monster, it is just a baby. Monsters are difficult to train as babies, and will often cheat on or fail any training you give them. After seven months, your monster will enter adulthood and will be ready for serious training.
Take your monster out on an errantry (called "training" in "Monster Rancher 1"). Errantries differ from normal drills in length and cost as well as outcome. Regular drills last only one week and only raise base stats, but errantries last a full month, cost money and are the only way to gain new battle techniques.
Speak to the errantry master and choose a location for your errantry. Each area is associated with a stat. The errantry master will confirm your selection by assessing the effectiveness of the training.
Look for reports from the errantry master telling you, "Your monster may learn a tech." This means that chances are very high that your monster will learn a technique at this location. "Your monster will learn no new techniques here," on the other hand, means that there are no abilities for your monster to learn at this location. The assessment, "It may be difficult to learn a new technique" means that a move is available, but you do not yet meet the qualifications for learning it.
Try another zone if you get a "may be difficult" assessment. Some techniques belong to chains in which another move must be learned first.
Continue drilling stats. Some moves have stat requirements --- for example, the Beaclon technique "Horn Combo," which requires over 300 Strength to learn.
Change your monster's alignment. Some monsters have moves that can only be learned by a monster with either a "Good" or "Evil" nature. This nature can be affected during drills. Do not scold a monster for cheating at a drill if you want to make it evil, and do not praise it for an excellent job. A "Good" nature, conversely, requires punishment for cheating and encouragement for jobs well done.
Freeze your monsters for breeding. Monsters can die of old age, so before this happens, freeze them at the lab in town. Raise another monster and then combine the two at the lab. Powerful monsters with lots of techniques will have children with increased stats and lots of techniques of their own.
