How to Calculate Monster Level in FF8

"Final Fantasy VIII" is one of the few games in the "Final Fantasy" series that has a variable level for monsters encountered. Any monster you encounter has its level modified to be roughly similar to the level of your party members. Unlike most games in the series, leveling up does not make "Final Fantasy VIII" easier. Being a higher level can make it more difficult to progress if your weapons are not sufficiently upgraded. Most players attempt to keep the party level as low as possible to make the game easier to beat.

Instructions

    • 1

Add together the level of each member of your party who is not unconscious. The level of characters not in your party or unconscious characters has no effect on the monster level.

    • 2

Divide the sum of the character levels by the number of conscious party members. This is the average party member level.

    • 3

Multiply the average party level by 0.8. This is the lowest possible monster level.

    • 4

Multiply the average party level by 1.2. This is the maximum possible monster level. The monster level of any encounter in "Final Fantasy VIII" is randomly chosen between the minimum and maximum monster levels.
