How to Remove Scratches From PS1 Games

Scratches on PS1 game discs can lead to skipping, load errors and other issues during gameplay. Games for the original PlayStation game console used technology similar to compact discs, which also fall victim to scratches. Although there are a lot of products on the market that can buff scratches off games, CDs, DVDs and other disc-based media, try using a method that employs a common household item before spending money on special products.

Things You'll Need

  • Plain white toothpaste
  • Cotton cloth

Instructions

    • 1

Squeeze about 1 tablespoon of toothpaste onto your fingertip or directly onto the disc. Use your fingers to massage the toothpaste into the disc. Place your fingers at any point on the center ring and push out to the outer rim of the disc. Repeat until the entire disc is covered.

    • 2

Rub the toothpaste into the disc moving back and forth in a straight line between the inner ring and outer edge. Focus on any deep scratches and work the toothpaste into them.

    • 3

Rinse the disc with cool to lukewarm water. Rinse very well until there is no toothpaste left on the disc.

    • 4

Dab the disc with the cotton cloth to soak up excess water. Allow the disc to air dry. Test the game in your PlayStation when the disc is completely dry.
