What Is a Playstation 1?

Playstation 1 is a video game console developed by the company Sony Corp. The Playstation 1 was first released in Japan on December 3, 1994. Since then, Sony has designed and sold the Playstation 2 and 3.
  1. History

    • Sony originally was paired to work with Nintendo to develop an SNES-CD console, but tension between the companies grew and they split ways. The Sony Playstation 1 had its official launch in the United States on September 9, 1995 with a starting price of $299. Sony stopped production on the Playstation 1 in 2005.

    SIgnificance

    • The Playstation 1 marks the transition from cartridge video game consoles to CD and DVD operated systems. Sony also was the first to utilize the memory card with the Playstation 1. Sony announced that over 962 million games and 100 million consoles have been sold worldwide for the Playstation 1.

    Game Impact

    • While Nintendo's focus was---and is---on young adults and children, the Playstation 1 was the first system to fully grasp the adult game genre, with such games as Resident Evil and Silent Hill. Some of the top video game series that the Playstation 1 helped to make popular are still around: Final Fantasy, Resident Evil, Gran Turisma, Metal Gear Solid, Tony Hawk Pro-skater, Silent Hill, Driver, Grand Theft Auto and Medal of Honor, originally all began on, or had games on, the Playstation 1.
