"Metal Gear Solid"
Released by Konami in 1998, "Metal Gear Solid" was the first game in the long-running "Metal Gear" franchise to be rendered in 3D. It features the story of special forces operative Solid Snake as he infiltrates the Shadow Moses military base to prevent a nuclear attack. Focused on stealth-based gameplay, "Metal Gear Solid" was followed by three sequels on the PlayStation 2 and 3 consoles, as well as three titles on the PSP handheld system.
"Final Fantasy VII"
Developed by Square and released in June 1997, "Final Fantasy VII" was the first game in the long-running "Final Fantasy" series to appear on the PlayStation. Celebrated by gaming journalists for its graphical presentation and plot, "Final Fantasy VII" was considered a significant step forward for role-playing games. The "Final Fantasy" series has continued forward with a number of sequels, including "Final Fantasy XIII" for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2010.
"Twisted Metal 2"
Developed by SingleTrac, "Twisted Metal 2" was released in November 1996 as a follow-up to the car combat video game "Twisted Metal." Featuring gameplay based around vehicles equipped with weapons and piloted by a cast of unique characters in combat, "Twisted Metal 2" included both single player and multiplayer modes. The "Twisted Metal" franchise continued with games released on the PlayStation and PlayStation 2, as well as an upcoming title expected to be released in 2011 for the PlayStation 3.
"Gran Turismo"
Developed by Sony and released in May 1998, "Gran Turismo" featured simulated racing gameplay using real-world vehicles. Physics in "Gran Turismo" were designed to mimic actual racing, with vehicles reacting to track conditions and racing surfaces. The ability to upgrade cars allowed gamers to customize vehicles for different types of racing events. The "Gran Turismo" franchise continued on the PlayStation series of consoles, with "Gran Turismo 5" scheduled to be released in late 2010.
