Sony Attempts to Breaks into the the Video Game Console Market
The PlayStation first began as an accessory to the Super Nintendo in 1988. Sony held complete rights over this CD attachment to the SNES. The project expanded to become a stand-alone console that could play both CDs and SNES cartridges. Afraid that Sony would take over their market share, Nintendo pulled the plug on the PlayStation in 1991.
The First PlayStation
After being dumped by Nintendo, Sony tried to develop their PlayStation for Nintendo's rival, Sega. Like their deal with Nintendo, the PlayStation for Sega fell through. By 1993, Sony's PlayStation was nearly complete, despite not having a deal with either of the two major gaming console companies. In 1994 the Sony PlayStation launched as an independent video game console.
The Rise of the PlayStation
Since its release in 1994, the PlayStation has become a pillar of the video game market through its willingness to reach out to third-party game producers. By making the PlayStation easily accessible to unaligned game makers it has managed to hold a significant share of the video game market through all three iterations of the PlayStation.
