How to Copy a PS1 Game to a Hard Drive

The original Sony Playstation is the console that finally toppled Nintendo as the leading video-game console. Though the system is now woefully outdated and no longer supported by Sony, many of its games are still as popular as they once were. Because it is often difficult to find Playstation games, however, Playstation owners turn to other means to make backups of their favorite game disks. One of the simplest methods of protecting a PS1 game disk is to back up the whole disk as a "disk image" to your computer's hard drive, using a burning program such as Nero or IMGburn.

Instructions

  1. Using IMGburn

    • 1

Open up your preferred Web browser and navigate to the IMGburn download page. IMGburn is the successor to DVD Decryptor, and is a powerful CD and DVD burning tool in its own right.

    • 2

Download and install IMGburn onto your computer.

    • 3

Launch IMGburn and insert the PS1 game disk you wish to copy into your computer's CD-R/RW drive.

    • 4

Click the "Create Image File From Disk" option on the IMGburn opening screen. This will bring you to a new CD Burning screen.

    • 5

Select the CD drive containing your PS1 game disk from the "Source" menu, then click the small folder button next to the "Destination" label and choose a location on your hard drive where you want to save the CD backup.

    • 6

Click the "Read" button at the bottom of the IMGburn screen to start the backup process.

    Using Nero Burning Rom

    • 7

Insert your PS1 game disk into your Computer's CD-R/RW and launch Nero Burning Rom.

    • 8

Click "Nero Express" to launch the "Nero Express" window.

    • 9

Click the "Copy Entire Disc" option. This will bring up a new window with drop-down menus for both the source and the destination drive.

    • 10

Select the drive with the Playstation game disk as the "source" drive, and select "Image Recorder" as the destination drive.

    • 11

Click the "Copy" button to start the process of burning the PS1 game disk onto your hard drive as an image file.

    Using DVD Decrypter

    • 12

Download and install "DVD Decrypter" from the link included in the "resources" section.

    • 13

Launch "DVD Decrypter" and insert your PS1 game disk into your computer's CD-R/RW drive.

    • 14

Click the "Source" menu and select the drive with your PS1 game disk.

    • 15

Type in a location on your hard drive--or browse for it using the small "browse" button next to the text box--where you wish to save the PS1 game disk backup.

    • 16

Click the "Decrypt" button at the bottom of the DVD Decrypter window.
