How to Convert PSX NTSC to PAL

The PlayStation was released by Sony Computer Entertainment in 1995 and was among the first consoles to achieve full 3-D graphics and amassed classic games such as "Twisted Metal" and "Metal Gear Solid." Not all Playstations are created equal, however. Some are set to correspond with the NTSC video standard found in most of North America and Japan while some are set to the PAL video standard found in Europe. An NTSC PlayStation will not play on a PAL TV without first having its video signal converted to PAL standards, which can be done using a simple converter box.

Things You'll Need

  • NTSC-to-PAL converter box
  • PlayStation with video cable attachment
  • PAL TV
  • Composite video cable

Instructions

    • 1

Connect the video output cable of the PlayStation, which will have a yellow plastic head, to the video input of the converter box, which will have a yellow plastic ring around the edge.

    • 2

Connect the video output of the converter box to the video input of the PAL television using the extra composite video cable. Both the converter box&'s output an the television&'s input should be clearly labeled, with the television&'s video input typically located in the back of the device (though this may vary according to model).

    • 3

Power on the television and the PlayStation and set the TV to the proper video channel. This can be accomplished by pressing "Source" or "Input" or "Video" on your TV&'s remote until you reach the corresponding channel.

    • 4

Flip the converter box&'s switch to "PAL" if applicable. The PlayStation should begin streaming its video signal to the box, which will then be converted and outputted to the television where it should appear on your screen.
