Tony Hawk's Pro Skater
Activision released Tony Hawk's Pro Skater for PlayStation in August of 1999. Video game critics thought favorably of Pro Skater, as GameSpot gave the game a rating of 9.3 out of 10, while IGN ranked it fourth on its list of the "Top 25 PlayStation Games of All Time." Pro Skater features real professional skateboarders; the different skaters in the game have special moves and each offers specific advantages and disadvantages. New skateboards are also earned by players who are successful in meeting goals.
Gran Turismo 2
Gran Turismo 2 was released for the original PlayStation in November of 1999. IGN ranked Gran Turismo 2 number three on their list of the "Top 25 PlayStation games of All Time," and GameSpot gave it a rating of 8.5 out of 10. Gran Turismo 2 is a racing game that lets players compete against others on over 20 different courses. Players can choose between different types of cars, and as the game progresses, more car options are unlocked. Players can participate in individual races or play Gran Turismo mode, which is an ongoing series of races and driving tests. Gran Turismo 2 also lets players practice in its "Demonstration" mode, and gamers can race in dirt and mud in off-road rally racing.
Metal Gear Solid
Konami released the first Metal Gear Solid game for the PlayStation in October of 1998. Metal Gear Solid received a great deal of critical praise, as it garnered a rating of 8.5 out of 10 from GameSpot and was named the best PlayStation game ever on IGN's Top 25 list. Metal Gear Solid puts players in the role of Snake, an agent who must help hunt down a terrorist group featuring members he knows from his past. Players must get through different missions by completing objectives that lead to eliminating terrorist threats. Some missions challenge players to figure out puzzles and locate items, while others pit Snake against enemy leaders.
