Since the mid-2000s, video-game publisher Activision has paired with outdoor outfitter giant Cabela's to create a series of hunting games for Playstation video-game consoles. Hunting games are rare on video-game consoles, particularly because of their lack of action. Hunting as a sport involves long periods of silence, and patiently waiting until a target appears. Hunting video games require the same strategy, but it is done from the comfort of the living room sofa or lazy chair.

Cabela's Trophy Bucks
- "Cabela's Trophy Bucks" was released in September of 2007 for the Playstation 2 console. The single-player game features a geographic setup of 24 states and provinces located across North America. Each state and province represents a different game level, where you must shoot and kill wildlife. While trophy bucks are the game's big prizes, players can hunt other wildlife as well, including smaller deer, bunnies, squirrels, ducks, turkeys and geese. As a hunter, you are aided by a trusty hunting dog and given the opportunity to earn hunting gear and equipment that help improve your success. Unlike some hunting games that require hours of stalking prey, "Cabela's Trophy Bucks" contains an arcade element that speeds up game play. However, players looking for a fast-paced arcade game will likely be disappointed. Video gamers who enjoy hunting and want a relaxing game that passes the time may find that this game does just that.
Cabela's Big Game Hunter
- Released in November of 2007, "Cabela's Big Game Hunter" is available for both Playstation 1 and Playstation 2 consoles. "Cabela's Big Game Hunter" offers a realistic hunting experience. The game features a variety of hunter characters, apparel and gear. Hunters must follow actual hunting laws in eight locations across the southwest United States and Canada. An impressive feature of this game is its adherence to the rules of physics. Every bullet shot reacts exactly as it would in real life. The developers' attention to detail creates a natural hunting feel for gamers. Hunters may also enjoy the game's free-range motion, absent of checkpoints. This direction allows hunters to wander the woods, target the big game prey and fire at will.
Cabela's Outdoor Adventures
- Released in September of 2009, "Cabela's Outdoor Adventures" is the first of the Cabela's series for the Playstation 3 console. The game is also available for Playstation 2 owners. Although the game shares a title with a previously released version in 2005, the newest edition of "Outdoor Adventures" offers much improved game play. Unlike earlier games in the Cabela's series, there is very little waiting around in "Outdoor Adventures." The game cuts right to the action, which makes it far more attractive to video game enthusiasts than games that require hours of waiting. The graphics are also much improved over previous versions, especially on the Playstation 3 console. The game features a three-dimensional hunting environment, enhanced with acute attention to details right down to the leaves and grass. Hunters advance through the game after successfully completing various objectives. The latest edition in Cabela's series offers the most bang for your buck.
