Playstation 1 Instructions

The fifth generation of video game consoles helped lead the way to the future of consoles, and it started with the release of the Sony Playstation in 1994. The system operates by using optical discs and was so successful that it sold more than 100 million copies. The Playstation's technology and set-up may be confusing to some, but the following instructions will provide basic instruction and details to guide readers.
  1. System Set-Up

    • Setting up the Playstation requires only two basic cables: The power cable attaches into the back of the Playstation using a two-pronged port that connects to a standard outlet, while the audio/video cables are specifically designed for the system and plug into a special output in the back of the system. The RCA cables on the other end connect into an input on a television, VCR or other device. Once connected, turn on the Playstation to test the system. The power button is located on the left side, while the disc open button is located on the right side.

    Games

    • All Playstation games are played on CD optical discs. Press the open button on top of the Playstation console and insert the CD into the loader with the label facing up. Make sure the case is shut so the system can read the game. Do not insert any burned or PS2 games, or games made for other consoles, because the system will not play them, and they could damage the laser or game itself.

    Lasers

    • From time to time the laser may collect dust or dirt. Use a CD laser cleaning kit, and if that does not work, manually clean it. Open the CD loader and remove any games in the system, then take a dry, soft tissue and lightly graze it across the top of the laser. Do not touch the laser with your finger. Retry the game when completed.

    Controllers

    • Playstation works with two types of standard controllers. The first is the original Playstation controller, which features a D-pad for movements, four action buttons defined by shapes, and four top buttons labeled R1, R2, L1 and L2. The advanced Playstation controller is known as the Dual Shock and features a rumble pad and two analog directional sticks, as well as all of the standard controllers. For games that use four controllers, a controller extension base must be purchased and attached through a controller port.

    Memory Cards

    • Just above the controller slot is a slot for memory cards, which are essential for any game and data saves. Follow the arrow on the memory card and insert it slowly into the system. The card should click into place when it is inserted all of the way. Manage your saved games by playing any of them and going to the "Save Options" menu. Clear out old files, add new ones and see how many files you have.
