Significance
Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero was the first game in the Mortal Kombat series to fall outside the "fighting" genre. Nevertheless, its controls are very similar to the earlier games in the series, with four attack buttons, a block button and a "run" button that allows the player to move more quickly.
Plot
The game's storyline involves Lin Kuei assassin Sub-Zero's quest to stop an evil sorcerer, Quan Chi, from awakening the sleeping Elder God Shinnok. Quan Chi plans to accomplish this by use of a mystic medallion.
Reception
The game received mixed reviews. Some critics felt that it was too difficult overall. Reviewer GameSpot, however, gave PlayStation version the game a 7.5 out of 10, saying that it was "a pretty amazing meld of fighting and platform jumping."
Connection to Greater Series
After Sub-Zero succeeds in foiling the magician's plot, he finds himself hired by the sorcerer Shang Tsung. This links the game's storyline to the original Mortal Kombat, making Mythologies: Sub-Zero a prequel to the fighting game series.
Fun Fact
Kerri Hoskins and Lia Montelongo, who portray Quan Chi's assassins Kia and Sareena, previously appeared in the Mortal Kombat series as Sonya Blade and Sindel, respectively.
