How to Turn Your UMD Games Into ISO

The Sony PlayStation Portable (PSP) is a hand held gaming device that supports hundreds of well-known game titles. PSP games are stored on a special disc encased inside a proprietary plastic case known as a UMD. PSP UMD discs are expensive and not always easy to carry around. Performing a special modification to the firmware of a PSP will allow you to copy UMD games to a special memory card in the ISO format. The ISO format allows you to compress the games, which makes them smaller. With a "modded" PSP and ISO files, you can also play games directly from a USB drive or memory disc without ever needing to insert the UMD disc. Better still, you can copy ISO images of the game to a PC and keep them as backups in case you damage or lose the UMD disc.

Instructions

  1. Modify the PSP Firmware

    • 1

Purchase a Pandora battery and Memory Stick for your PSP.

    • 2

Ensure there is no UMD disc in the PSP. Unplug the power cord from the PSP.

    • 3

Insert the Pandora Magic Memory Stick in the memory card slot of the PSP. The Magic Memory Stick is a special adapter that allows you to use the Pandora Battery to update the PSP firmware. The Pandora Battery will not work with the PSP without the Magic Memory Stick adapter.

    • 4

Insert the Pandora Battery into the Pandora Magic Memory Stick, then press the power button on the PSP to turn it on. Wait for the screen to display the firmware installation instructions. Press the "X" button on the PSP to begin the installation, then follow all the on-screen prompts.

    • 5

Wait for the firmware installation to finish, then press the "X" button to shut down the PSP. Restart the PSP with the new firmware.

Convert a UMD Disc to an ISO File

    • 6

Turn on the PSP, then press the "Select" button. Scroll down to the "USB Device" option, then press the "X" button. The value option changes to "UMD Disc" after pressing the "X" button.

    • 7

Insert the UMD disc you want to convert to an ISO image file into the PSP game disc slot.

    • 8

Connect the small end of the USB cable to the port on the PSP. Connect the other end of the cable to an empty USB slot on your computer. Wait for Windows to detect and configure the PSP connection on your computer.

    • 9

Go the PC. Click "Start" and then "Computer." Double-click the drive letter for new the PSP device under the "Removable Media" section of "Computer."

    • 10

Highlight the disc icon picture in the PSP drive folder, then drag and drop the icon into a folder on your computer. The modified firmware will convert the file to an ISO image automatically as it copies to your Windows-based computer.
