Differences in the PSP 1000, 2000 & 3000

Between 2004 and 2008, Sony's PlayStation Portable went through three designs: the PSP 1000, 2000 and 3000. At the core they are the same console, all capable of performing the PSP's main functions. The differences between them are mainly cosmetic, with ports being repositioned and the size reduced, but some functionality issues do vary.
  1. Dimensions

    • The PSP 1000 is the biggest of the three models with a width of 6.7 inches, height of 0.9 inches, depth of 2.9 inches and a weight of 9.88 oz. The 2000 and 3000 models are slightly wider at 6.75 inches, but the other dimensions make them slimmer and lighter, with a height of 0.75 inches, a depth of 2.75 inches and a weight of 6.7 oz.

    Connectivity

    • All three models have built in Wi-Fi connectivity for accessing wireless networks. They all also have USB ports, but only the 2000 and 3000 models are USB 2.0 compatible. The 1000 has an infrared port that was dropped in the later models.

    System Memory

    • The RAM on the PSP 1000 is 32 MB, but this was upgraded on the PSP 2000 and 3000 to 64 MB. The greater system memory allows for faster load times in applications, as well as increasing system performance in general.

    Display

    • Despite the different dimensions of the three consoles, the screen size remains the same on each at 4.3 inches. The quality of the screen is only different on the PSP 3000, which has a higher contrast ratio, better response times and anti-reflective technology to improve playability in high lighting conditions. The PSP 2000 and 3000 have a TV output slot on the console that allows you to connect it to your television with the right cable, letting you play PSP games on a bigger screen.
