Size and Weight
The power adapter for a PSP is a simple rectangle about 1 3/4 inches by 3/4 inches at one end. Depending on the type of PSP you have, the length will be slightly different. The more recent PSP-3000 power adapter is 3 inches long, while the prior generation of PSPs -- the PSP-1000 and PSP-2000 models -- had about a 2 1/2-inch-long charging unit. The 3000 generation's charger is also lighter, weighing a little over 2 oz., compared to the older power adapter, which is closer to 4 oz.
Input
The power adapters for all PSP models are designed to be universal, capable of receiving power input between 100 volts and 240 volts of alternating current (AC). American power supplies are 120 volts AC, and most European countries use the 240-volt AC standard. If you travel with your PSP, you will need an adapter, but no transformer. You can use the power adapter worldwide without damaging the unit.
Output
The small, lightweight unit changes the power input into what is needed to charge and run your PSP device. For the PSP 3000, the output is 5 volts of direct current (DC) at 1500 mA (milliamps). The PSP 1000 and 2000 models put out slightly more power, as it's required for their battery units: 2000 mA at 5 volts DC.
Warnings
Do not open your PSP power adapter, as you may damage it. Never work on the PSP power adapter while it is plugged into the PSP or connected to the wall. Do not use a power adapter that puts out more current or power than the standard Sony PSP adapter; otherwise, you will damage the battery or blow the PSP's circuitry.
