How to Unlock a PSP for Free

The Sony PlayStation Portable (PSP) is hand-held video game system that can be unlocked to play homebrew, or independently developed, games. To unlock the PSP, you need to place it into service mode and install custom firmware onto it. You can pay for a PSP unlocking service, or this can be done for free with a service tool battery and Magic Memory Stick.

  • Magic Memory Stick

Instructions

      Turn the PSP off and remove the battery and memory stick from the device. Insert the Magic Memory Stick into the PSP.

      Insert the service tool battery and the PSP will turn on automatically. The PSP will be in service mode.

      Press the "X" button to proceed in unlocking the PSP and installing custom firmware. Press the "X" button once more to verify that you want to install the custom firmware.

      Press the "X" button once more to shut down the PSP. Replace the battery and memory stick with the normal ones.
