Why Are My MP3 Files Using So Much Memory on My PSP?

Music files are added to the Playstation Portable (PSP) through the Sony Media Go software program or by manually adding music files to the Music folder through the use of a USB cable. The size of an mp3 file depends on the length of the audio and the compression settings used to create the mp3 file.
  1. PSP Memory Cards

    • The PSP can accept Memory Stick Duo cards manufactured by Sony and other companies of any data size. Common data sizes range from 1 gigabyte to 32 gigabytes. The data size of the card directly affects how much music can be put onto the system.

    Mp3 Codec Considerations

    • The mp3 audio format allows for varying levels of compression, bit rate and sample rate, all of which determine the final size of the mp3 file. Some audiophiles prefer to hear music with a higher bit rate because it preserves more digital data from the audio file. However, a higher bit rate will create an mp3 file with a much larger file size. If your mp3 files are encoded at a higher bit rate, you can use audio editing software to adjust the amount of compression in your mp3 files. An "average" mp3 file using a 128k bit rate and 44.1 Hz sample rate will be approximately one megabyte per minute of audio. A gigabyte of memory will therefore be able to store approximately 1,000 minutes of audio.

    Memory Card Usage

    • The PSP stores important data on the memory card as well, including game save data, operating system data, system update files and more. The amount of memory dedicated to game save data depends on the number of games saved on the PSP. System update download files can be deleted from the memory card after installation to free up additional space on the memory card and make room for additional audio files.
