How to Put a PSP in Service Mode Without a Battery

You can modify the Sony PlayStation Portable (PSP) so that the operating system will play games off of a memory stick. To modify the PSP, first put it into the "service mode" hidden within the normal procedure for turning on the PSP. You'll need to download a program created by a PSP enthusiast will need onto a PC and install it on the PSP's memory card--this will not cause any harm to either of them.

      Plug the PSP end of the PSP cable into the slot in the PSP. Plug the other end into a USB port on the computer.

      Turn the PSP on. Navigate to the "Settings" menu. Select "USB Mode" from beneath "Settings." Press the "A" button on the PSP.

      Close any window that might now appear on the PC by clicking the red "X" button in the window's upper right corner.

      Download a PSP modification program for the PSP: for example, the Pandora Crashers PSP 1000, PSP 2000 or PSP 3000 modification program. Double-click the file once downloaded to decompress it to a folder on the desktop.

      Double-click the folder to open its window. Double-click the PSP modification program in the folder which matches the type of PSP you have.

      Hold down the "R" button on the PSP. Press the "Start" button on the PSP while continuing to hold the "R" button down. Press the "Start" button that pops up on the PC. Release the buttons when the screen goes blank.

      Right-click the icon of the PSP on the hard drive. Select "Eject" from the pop-up menu. Remove the PSP cable from the PSP and from the USB port of the PC.

      Turn on the PSP. Wait as the PSP boots itself into the service mode.
